Plastics are versatile, cost-effective, and durable โ qualities that make them invaluable materials. But when used for single-use packaging of perishable goods like bread, fruits, and vegetables, this durability becomes a problem. When such packaging ends up in the wrong waste streams or in the environment, it creates long-lasting pollution.

Daniel Steinitz studied โEnvironmental and Bioresource Managementโ at the BOKU University in Vienna. For several years he has been working in the field of renewable energies for the Austrian Solar Energy Association before moving to the compost department of the Austrian Compost & Biogas Association in 2020, where he was involved intensively with the topic of microplastics and compostable packaging. At the end of 2021, he took over the management of โbรผndnis mikroplastikfreiโ, which was founded on the initiative of the Austrian Compost & Biogas Association.
As of July 2025, Daniel heads Technology and Innovation Management, where his work reflects a strong commitment to advancing practical solutions for microplastic reduction.
His talk will provide valuable perspectives on where we are and where weโre heading in reducing plastic pollution.
