The EU Water Reuse Regulation (2020/741) sets quality standards for reuse and the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive tightens discharge obligations. As extreme heat and drought are intensifying, on-site water recirculation and intensive greening can provide a dual solution for public sanitation and a cooler environment.
How it works
Greywater and blackwater are collected and fed to the top of the system. It passes down through a planted growing medium, where microbial communities in the root zone break down organic load, nutrients, and pathogens. Treated water is collected at the base, disinfected through ozonation, and returned to the building for service water reuse. The chemical-free, low-energy vertECO® technology safely achieves the EU water reuse class B, allowing agricultural reuse of the treated water for spray irrigation of certain edible plants.
vertECO® treatment units have been installed across Europe, including at the Hotel Samba in Lloret de Mar, Costa Brava, Spain, an apartment building in Austria, as well as pilots in Sweden and Switzerland.
