How hemp fibres, biopolymers and lignin are contributing to a circular green wall in Vienna

As the construction sector looks to reduce its reliance on fossil-based materials, innovative bio-based solutions are becoming increasingly relevant.
Within the EU-funded ATRIUM Project, research has focused on developing sustainable solutions – transforming bio-based resources into practical construction products.

One standout innovation is the GRETATM green wall, developed by alchemia-nova with support of Wood K plus – Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH and the ATRIUM Project Consortium:

  • Combines hemp fibers, PHA (biopolymer), and lignin sourced in Austria
  • Integrates water treatment by cleaning household greywater for reuse
  • Requires approx. 1.5 m² per person equivalent for effective filtration

The material behind it matters: PHA is produced via microbial fermentation from plant-based resources – fully biodegradable, microplastic-free, and as versatile as conventional plastics.

Beyond functionality, GRETA also supports urban biodiversity through native wetland species like meadowsweet and marsh euphorbia, sourced from local organic farming systems.

🌿 Experience GRETA live at the Second Life Market “Re-Use – Love it Longer” at Zukunftshof Rothneusiedl in Vienna!

📅 Sa, 27.06.2026 10-22h

The GRETA green wall will be on display for all visitors, and our Water & NBS team lead Marco Hartl is presenting a keynote speech at 3:00 pm:
💦Closing the Water Cycle – Nature-Based Solutions for Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery💦
How can wastewater be treated on-site and recovered as a valuable resource — instead of simply being discharged into the sewer? Marco will show how nature-based solutions like planted soil filters and vertical green walls can close local water and nutrient cycles.
