This study was carried out within the framework of the GEORGIA EU Project and demonstrates how resource-oriented sanitation (ROS) can enhance nutrient and water reuse within sustainable food systems, supporting circular and nature-based approaches at farm and catchment level.
Using an expert-based SDG target interaction assessment, the study identifies positive interactions between ROS and SDG targets in the Austrian context – showing that ROS functions as a cross-sectoral enabler within the water-energy-food-environment nexus, with strong links to sustainable food production, water quality, resource efficiency and climate resilience.
The findings provide valuable input for cross-sectoral governance and support the integration of decentralised sanitation approaches that enable e.g. farmers to access alternative water and nutrient sources for more resilient and resource-efficient agricultural practices — directly aligned with GEORGIA’s mission of transforming water management for resilient farming.
