The construction sector is one of the most resource- and energy-intensive industries in Europe, responsible for approximately 40% of CO₂ emissions and nearly one-third of all waste generated in the EU. In Austria, it accounts for around 50% of resource use and over 70% of waste, much of it from excavated material that is typically landfilled. Despite its impact, recycling rates for construction materials remain low. Transitioning to a circular built environment is crucial and supported by EU policies such as the Green Deal and Taxonomy Regulation. Key strategies include reuse-oriented design, modular construction, and digital material passports. Collaboration across the value chain and systemic innovation are essential to unlock Austria’s untapped circular potential.
