๐ŸŒฑTurning food scraps into plant power, directly where they are produced. โ™ป๏ธย 

This week, we are setting up the ๐ฉ๐ข๐ฅ๐จ๐ญ ๐›๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ at our technical demonstration site in Vienna, the ๐Š๐ฅ๐ž๐ข๐ง๐ž ๐’๐ญ๐š๐๐ญ๐Ÿ๐š๐ซ๐ฆ, as part of the ReLEAF Project EU.

Together with our partner AERIS Tecnologias Ambientales SL, we are bringing an innovative approach from the lab into a real-world environment.
To support the setup and run the first fermentation batch, Jana Font i Pomarol from AERIS joined Nils Klose and Marco Hartl in Vienna. The bioreactor, developed by AERIS, will allow us to test a novel process: producing ๐›๐ข๐จ-๐›๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐จ๐ ๐ฌ๐œ๐ซ๐š๐ฉ๐ฌ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐-๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง.

Hereโ€™s how it works:
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Food scraps from the restaurant at the Kleine Stadtfarm are mixed with wood chips.
๐Ÿ„ The mixture is inoculated with Trichoderma harzianum, a beneficial fungus known asย ๐š ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐ ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ก ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ๐จ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ.
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Inside the bioreactor, the material undergoes ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐-๐ฌ๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ž ๐š๐ž๐ซ๐จ๐›๐ข๐œ ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง with a constant oxygen supply for about six days.

The fungus uses the food waste as a substrate to grow and develop its biostimulant properties.
The result: ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐ฌ๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ญ๐ก ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฐ๐ž๐ซ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐›๐ข๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐š๐ง๐ญ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ฌ โ€” ๐š ๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ž๐, ๐›๐ข๐จ-๐›๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ.
Once applied to plants, Trichoderma ย colonizes their roots – helping them grow stronger, extend their root systems, access water and nutrients more efficiently, and improve resistance against harmful fungi.

What makes this particularly exciting is the ๐œ๐ฅ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž๐-๐ฅ๐จ๐จ๐ฉ ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐š๐œ๐ก:
The food scraps used in the process come from the very same location where the bioreactor operates.
From plate โ†’ to fermentation โ†’ back to the soil.
With the ReLeaf project, we aim to demonstrate how ๐ฅ๐จ๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ž๐ ๐›๐ข๐จ-๐ฐ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž ๐œ๐š๐ง ๐›๐ž ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐ฒ๐œ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐จ ๐ข๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž, ๐š๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐›๐ข๐จ-๐›๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ – bringing circular bioeconomy solutions closer to everyday practice.
