PhytoMine

Analysing metal accumulation in plants

Project summary

Within this project metal accumulating plant species were cultivated on different slag substrate mixtures in lab and field scale experiments to analyse the uptake of metals in various plants, as well as plant parts. These trials took place for two years in the green house and two years in field trials on the landfill Rautenweg to gather application-oriented data for the implementation of the concept of recovering metals by hyper-accumulating plants. From the biomass itself five different strategies were explored to gain a bio-ore in the first step and further to recover the metals in their pure form. The recovery was done by external partners.

One dissertation and two master theses were conducted in cooperation with BOKU.
