Vienna Circularity Hubs

Turning secondary resources into stepping stones towards circularity

Project summary

In the Vienna Circularity Hubs project, alchemia-nova is consulted the city of Vienna on the planning and implementation of circularity hubs to capture and valorise secondary resources and contribute to the transition towards a circular economy. This involved identifying secondary resources that could be captured and valorised in a combination of decentralised & centralised processes and technologies together with necessary infrastructures and spatial requirements for their implementation. The project provided guidelines for implementing circular economy hubs in Vienna and estimated the effects on different parameters. This project was implemented in contribution to the development of the next 10-year Urban Development Plan of Vienna (Stadtentwicklungsplan – STEP 2035).

Vision

The project aimed to help the city conceptualise circularity hubs and promote a circular economy in Vienna as a steppingstone for the city’s climate goals for 2040. By developing circularity hubs, the project contributed to extending the life of products, maintaining product value at higher levels, and recovering resources from urban waste streams otherwise lost to incineration and landfills.

Project outcomes

  • Identification of circularity potentials in different sectors and value networks
  • Characterisation of 10 archetypes of circularity hubs in Vienna based on best practices
  • Quantification and characterisation of spatial requirements for collection, repair and processing, storage and redistribution, and skills and measures for the implementation
  • Contribution to the development of Vienna’s Circular Economy Roadmap
  • Fundamentals for the implementation of the concept of circularity hubs within the STEP 2035
