Project summary
CONVERSION OF DILUTED MIXED URBAN BIO-WASTES INTO SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS IN FLEXIBLE PURPLEPHOTOBIOREFINERIES
Background
Up to 138 million tons of bio-waste, coming from wastewater treatment and urban organic food are annually generated in the EU1. It´s estimated that almost 75% of this waste is sent to incineration or landfilling, at a huge environmental and economic cost. Moreover, a high percentage of the waste holds great potential as a source of recycled materials, wastewater contains valuable components such as cellulose and nutrients that can be used as feedstock for many applications.
The DEEP PURPLE Solution
DEEP PURPLE proposes an integrated treatment of urban bio-waste in a novel Multi-Platform concept as a key option to implement a synergic treatment of relevant waste streams of urban origin (mixed waste streams, separately collected organic waste, wastewater and the organic fraction of sewage sludge).
The DEEP PURPLE Concept
The beneficial use of bio-waste is obtained by an innovative combination of optimised valorisation technologies and novel solutions such Purple Phototrophic Bacteria (PPB) based treatment or biogas bioconversion. These processes will be used for resources recovery from urban bio-waste to provide a secure and sustainable supply of biomass feedstock to be further transformed into high added-value products for different industrial sectors, like cosmetics, fertilizers and bioplastic production.
alchemia-nova’s role in the project
Social Acceptance of purified products out of waste water and biowaste
alchemia-nova is undertaking contextual (user-based) research activities including qualitative data collection methods such as interviews, shadowing, fly-on-the-wall observations and creative engagement to gain insights into end user and stakeholder requirements, need, prejudices and collective understanding regarding consumer product produced from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and wastewater treatment. Collective data processing methods such as design thinking workshops asses the collected data, to then offer guidance and report on the social sustainability of the developed processes and social benefits, social acceptance expected social adoption of the final consumer products.
Dissemination and Communication
alchemia-nova is securing the successful dissemination and communication of project outputs towards potentially interested parties and the public in general to enable future market replication and the commercial exploitation of the project’s outputs. In public awareness raising campaigns the multiple uses and safety of bio-organic waste and biogenic product are communicated to the general public and identified stakeholder groups including citizens, consumers, industry, producers of consumer products and waste management organisations.
